Classic Elements Meet Minimalist Moments In Texas

A painting by artist Padaric Kolander hangs above the fireplace in the library of a Houston home. As the wife notes, “He’s a man with a drink in his hand and he has a definite Texas attitude.” The desire to have a home reflecting the couple’s shared Texas roots mingled with an East Coast edge acquired during time living in New York City led them to Kolander’s studio and to other art selections, with the help of art consultant Maura Parro of Laura Rathe Fine Art.
Elsewhere, a depiction of a donkey–which the homeowners commissioned by artist Matt Manalo–situated on the stained-oak paneling in the entry, for example, is a subtle homage to the Lone Star’s cowboy culture, while abstract pieces like the bold blue Tony Magar in the informal dining area is a not-so-subtle New York shout out.
When it came to furnishings, designer Marie Flanigan continued the edgy Big Apple-meets-Southern vibe by melding skirted sofas and plush fabrics with heavy metal doors in the living room, and utilizing industrial stainless-steel cabinet pulls in the kitchen. Throughout the house, strong geometric patterns, evident in the limestone flooring and wall panels, dance with antiques and modern seating. As Flanigan explains, “The beauty of the union of traditional elements with minimalist design is evident in every detail.”
